The green building industry in
Canada is growing. In a study released by the Canada Green Building Council and
McGraw Hill Construction titled Canada Green Building Trends:
Benefits Driving the New and Retrofit Market it was found that companies
that invest in green buildings are seeing significant dividends on their

building owners and developers reported decreases in energy consumption in
their green buildings compared to similar buildings.
- 68% of
building owners and developers reported decreases in water consumption in
their green buildings.
median reduction in operating costs over five years for green buildings
reported by the firms included in the research is 17%.
median payback for the investment in a new green building is reported to
be eight years, a finding consistent with paybacks on studies McGraw Hill
has conducted in the U.S. and globally.
It's clear that the need for more
sustainable building practices and healthier living environments is a driving
force in the popularity of this movement. TheCanada Green Building Council is behind the growing number of industry professionals who are getting
involved in the green building movement, and the development of green building

Depending on where and who you are, you will have
to choose one of these membership types. They are as follows:
- National Member - This
level is for large or small companies, organizations or associations that
are involved in the construction, building, or material and supply
sectors. Companies can join the CaGBC as a Green Building Advocate or Green Building Specialist. If your
company cares about a greener building future, this membership is for you.
Member - This
level is for individuals that are interested in becoming a member of their
local chapter. You are interested in the green building movement, and will
enjoy the many networking and learning opportunities this membership will
offer. Chapters in Canada include; BC, Saskatchewan, Alberta, Manitoba,
Greater Toronto, Ottawa Region and Atlantic. A free Chapter membership is
available to each employee of a CaGBC National member company.
Green Builder (EGB) – This
membership level is with your local Chapter. Individuals that qualify for
this membership must fall into one of the following categories; you are a
full-time student or a former student within five years of graduation, or
a person that is 30 years of age or under and you are interested in the
green building industry. Get an EGB membership for free if you are an
employee of a corporate member company.
When you become a National member, the benefits you enjoy are shared with all of the employees of your
organization. Some of these benefits include a cost reduction in LEED exams and
prep courses, and well as the ability to vote on various initiatives. You will
have the ability to run for the CaGBC National Board as well as take part in
nominating and voting in members to this board. National members also receive a
free basic listing in the new Canada Builds Green online directory, and access to exclusive green building market research like the new
McGraw Hill Green Building Study cited above.
Chapter members enjoy benefits of
membership as well. Local chapter members have the opportunity to meet with
local green building professionals for networking and project implementation.
Chapter members also enjoy a reduced tuition rate on LEED courses,. Another
benefit to being a Chapter member is the ability to run for the Chapter Board
of Directors, as well as become involved in many volunteer opportunities in the
green building movement. A free Chapter membership is available to each
employee of a CaGBC corporate member company and this means in addition to all the Chapter specific benefits, they are also entitled to all the perks afforded to their company!
